Engineered


Alberta has a long history and international leadership in the development of engineered wood products with capacity in both structural (such as Plywood and Oriented Strandboard) and non-structural (such as MDF) wood-based panels, as well as other engineered wood products such as glulam, laminated veneer lumber (LVL), I-joists and oriented strand lumber (OSL).

The APA – The Engineered Wood Association sets quality standards for engineered wood products in North America through a rigorous testing and inspection program. APA stamped products are produced at member mills committed to ensuring quality assurance and product performance of structural engineered wood products of superior strength, versatility and reliability. 

Medium Density Fibreboard (MDF)

MDF is made from fine cellulose particles bonded with resin and heat-pressed to make a panel. The panels are manufactured in a variety of sizes and densities and are used to make furniture, kitchen cabinets, mouldings, and as a substrate in laminate flooring. The product has a smooth surface, good weathering properties, and machines smoothly. It is an excellent example of the use of material that was once a waste stream (sawdust) into an innovative product, ensuring more complete use of all available fibre.

Glue Laminated Timber (Glulam)

Glulam is manufactured by bonding pieces of dimensional lumber together to create simple beams and headers, huge curved or straight timbers used for construction of large arenas and stadiums. Pound for pound, glulam beams are stronger than steel and can span 30 metres or longer. They are increasingly used in exposed applications to highlight the aesthetic properties of wood, adding to the attractiveness of the structures in which they are used.

Laminated Veneer Lumber (LVL)

LVL is manufactured by bonding together layers of wood veneer and curing it in a heated press. LVL is a very reliable product that is virtually free from warping and splitting, making it desirable for applications that require a high level of dimensional stability, strength and quality control. LVL is available in a wide variety of dimensions and is easily worked using conventional construction tools.

I-joists

I-joists are engineered to reduce the problems that can occur with a conventional wood joist (such as twisting, cupping or splitting) and to greatly reduce the weight, making it easier to install. I-joists have a much higher strength to weight ratio as compared to similar dimension solid lumber.
